Mustangs Across America

From April 6 to April 19, 2009, Stan McKinney was on the road for 4,600 miles. His journey took him from Campbellsville, Ky. to Las Vegas, Nev. where he joined about 200 other Mustangs. Those Mustangs and McKinney's 2007 GT made their way through the west and southwest with a final destination of Birmingham, Ala. and the 45th Anniversary of the Mustang Car Show sponsored by the Mustang Club of America.
By the time the Mustangs Across America group reached Birmingham, they were more than 400 strong.
The national show attracted more than 3,000 Mustangs of all years and models.
McKinney took more than 2,000 photographs on the trip. On this page you will find photos of McKinney's Mustang on the trip and at the car show.
You will find scenic photos from the trip under the heading Travel Photography and The Grand Canyon and The Painted Desert. Photos  from the trip are continually being added to this site.

gathering point for the trip was Carroll Shelby's plant near the Las Vegas
    Super Speedway.

After crossing the Hoover Dam, many of the Mustangs pulled
over to check out the view. For more photos of the Hoover

After reaching Kingman, Ariz., the Mustangs turned onto a long stretch of Route 66. This is the view from the cockpit of Stan McKinney's Mustang.

Joan McKinney took this photo of Stan McKinney as he drove along
           Route 66 in Arizona.

The group stopped for lunch at Grand Canyon Caverns. The
temperature had dropped by almost 20 degrees since leaving
Las Vegas and rain had begun to fall.

Some of those traveling with the pony pack were able to stay at Wigwam Village in Holbrook, Ariz. The Chevrolet at left is part of a permanent display.

Stan McKinney stayed at Wigwam Village, but
it was on the way to Las Vegas, not on the way
                        back.

After leaving Holbrook, Ariz. on Sunday morning, April 12, several of the
Mustangs took a side trip through the Petrified Forest.

The Painted Desert Inn once provided a place for those journeying
along Route 66 to stay for the night. It has been restored and is
now used as a museum and rest stop in the national park. Behind
Stan McKinney's Mustang are some of the support buildings for the
inn. Photos of the inn can be found elsewhere on this site.

Just outside Amarillo, Texas is the Cadillac Ranch. Located within view
of I-40 and along what was once Route 66, 10 Cadillacs are buried front
end-first in the soil. The result is what some call art and others call
something else. Click here for additional photos of the Cadillac Ranch.

One of the largest crosses in the Southern Hemisphere is just off
I-40 near Groom, Texas. It is about 190 feet tall and well worth a
visit. To see additional photos, click here.

many historical displays devoted to Route 66.

Lunch for all of the Mustangers, who now numbered more than 400, was at
Trustmark Park in Jackson, Miss. on Wednesday, April 14. Above, the cars

who is a true Brave's fan, does the traditional "chop" outside the stadium
   after eating lunch.

Before making their way to hotels, all of those participating in the trip gathered for one last time at Riverchase Galleria in Birmingham, Ala. after arriving at about 5:30 p.m. The media was there to greet the Mustangs. A photo of the gathering appeared on page B1 of The Birmingham News on Thursday, April 16. It features several Mustangs including Stan McKinney's. Stan and Joan McKinney are also visible in the photo.

After some rest in Birmingham, it was time to head to Barber
Motorsports Park and the 45th Anniversary Show sponsored by the
Mustang Club of America. Above you can see the credentials issued
to all entered in the show.

There were Mustangs spread all over the motorsports park. This is a photo of some of the Mustangs Stan McKinney was parked next to on Friday, April 17. More than 3,000 Mustangs were entered in the show. The celebration also featured displays of the 2010 Mustang as well as many modified Mustangs from Shelby, Saleen and others. McKinney's Mustang won an Award of Excellence during the show.
